VIRTUAL GIG: ARTNIGHT

The Guerrilla Girls will present a multi-media run-through of their decades of activism. Along the way they will share their trade secrets about how they have used facts and humor to confront racism, sexism and corruption in the art world. Special emphasis will be on their project for Art Night: The Male Graze which will consist of billboards across the UK and a website. The billboards will ask museum goers to count women artists and naked female figures in their favorite museums and send the data to the Guerrilla Girls for comment. The website will document the art world’s enduring love affair with bad male behavior in art and give visitors a chance to tell their stories. make comments and offer apologies if needed.

At the end of the presentation there will be a short Q and A with the virtual audience. This one hour gig just might change the way we all look at art. Don’t miss it!

Guerrilla Girl Frida Kahlo and Na Cailleacha in conversation.

Mayo County Council Arts Service is delighted to present Guerrilla Girl Frida Kahlo in a virtual discussion with Na Cailleacha.

Guerrilla Girls has had a long-term friendship with Na Cailleacha member Catherine Marshall ever since the 2009 All Ireland Tour, that resulted in a number of collaborations.

Na Cailleacha are a group of eight female artists who, while on residency in the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, embarked on a series of projects exploring the many ideas related to being older female artists. They make art that allows them to explore this collective experience, attitudes to aging and their place in the artworld. To mark their ongoing support for the work of the Guerrilla Girls they have produced a Cailleach version of their landmark poster from 1988.

Catherine Marshall describes her relationship with the Guerrilla Girls since the 90s, “I only came to meet the Guerrilla Girls for the first time in 2009 but it felt as if I had known them forever, at least ever since I and other members of Na Cailleacha first became aware of their guerrilla activities on behalf of other women artists. We have taught their work, welcomed them to Ireland to participate in the Women Artists & Action Group and to speak at IMMA in the early 1990s and are now producing a poster in homage to their seminal work The Advantages of Being a Woman Artist. With their encouragement we will be launching The Advantages of Being a Cailleach Artist during our forthcoming residency in Ballinglen. Their witty and brilliant example helped our own ongoing fight to gain an equal playing field for women artists of all backgrounds here in Ireland.”

The conversation will take place online on June 25 th at 3pm (Ireland, and 10am EST) and will be chaired by visual artist Aideen Barry.

Guerrilla Girl Frida Kahlo will be brainstorming with a group of artists who are collaborating on a Social Sculpture concept for 2022.

YoungArts/Miami commissioned five (amazing) alumni artists to collaborate on a Social Sculpture. Three mentors were invited by YoungArts to shepherd and support their process. The pandemic has of course had an enormous impact on this project. We will all come together May 20 - 26th for an intensive working period, meant to support and inspire the five artists to solidify a central idea for this Social Sculpture initiative.

Panel: Guerrilla Girls, The Art of Behaving Badly

4p EST/ 7p PST

In celebration of their new book, Guerrilla Girls: The Art of Behaving Badly, Guerrilla Girls Frida Kahlo and Kathe Kollwitz discuss the book and their legacy, followed by a Q&A session.

The Guerrilla Girls are a group of political artists who have been exposing gender biases and discrimination in art and culture for over 30 years. Guerrilla Girls: The Art of Behaving Badly is the first book to catalog the entire career of the Guerrilla Girls from 1985 to present.

YouTube Live

In 1985, a bunch of feminist masked avengers began plastering posters all over downtown New York. They named galleries, museums, critics, collectors and white male artists who contributed to an art system prejudiced against women and artists of color. Since then, the collective has produced hundreds of projects exposing bias and corruption in art, film, pop culture and politics. Their unforgettable graphics have become a global phenomenon. This is the first book to document the Guerrilla Girls’ entire wild career of provocative street campaigns, books, performances, large‐scale exhibitions at museums and more. The Guerrilla Girls  contextualize their visuals and elaborate on their intersectional takedown of the patriarchy in their own words  throughout the book. This isn’t a monograph—it’s a call to arms.
