BEYOND THE STREETS: POST GRAFFITI

The concept of “POST GRAFFITI” encapsulates the genre's journey of rebellious subway artists, originating from 70’s and 80’s NYC, to the global movement they’ve inspired. The term signifies a shift from the illicit nature of traditional graffiti to a more accepted, legitimate art form in gallery settings. As the movement has progressed, artists associated with “POST GRAFFITI” continue to draw from the rich history of graffiti writing and the streets, forming a loose coalition that blurs and elevates their source inspiration through drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation.
“POST GRAFFITI” is at the core of “BEYOND THE STREETS”, representing the embodiment of a larger picture of how far it has all gone and how raw it still remains. Graffiti has become a cultural phenomenon that informs music, fashion, politics, entertainment, marketing, and, of course, contemporary art. It has been on the runways of major fashion houses and memorialized in books and documentaries.

This group exhibition at the SLG, organised in collaboration with the V&A, brings together works by international artists and collectives who are using the camera to challenge and move beyond traditional protest photography.
This urgent and political exhibition explores feminism and activism from an international and contemporary perspective. Looking at different approaches to feminism from the past 10 years, the show highlights shared concerns including intersectionality, transnational solidarity, and the use of social media and digital technology as a tool for change.
Acts of Resistance will reflect on recent events from across the globe, such as anti-rape protests in Bangladesh responding to the rise in violence against women and girls in 2020; the US Supreme Court overturning of Roe vs Wade in 2022; as well as the ongoing protests against the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.

The shop is divided into two sections: one for contemplation, the other focusing on action. The rousing visual centrepiece is a wrap-around fly-poster wall created in the spirit of how the Guerrilla Girls display their work, which aims to inspire and represent multiple voices. Content highlights include a chalk blackboard inviting visitors to write their own slogans in response to the artist’s participatory work, Complaints Department, and a Guerrilla Girls-themed photobooth complete with giant sunglasses, inflatable bananas and masks for visitors to interact with. Video content from the collective’s archive, some of which has never been viewed publicly before, will be streamed on screens throughout the space.

The women who loom large on canvases, in photographs, prints, sculpture and collage in Framing the Female Gaze vitally connect us to political and social issues and to the cultural and social discriminations that women experience now. The project will reinsert the accomplished 19th-century American artist Susie Barstow (1836-1923) into the history of the Hudson River School of landscape painting and present work by contemporary artists who expand and challenge how we think about “land” and “landscape” today.
It is the first retrospective of Barstow’s magnificent paintings, despite successfully exhibiting and selling her work during her lifetime. The Guerrilla Girls are an internationally-recognized collective of anonymous artists that adopt the names of deceased women artists to obscure their identities and keep the focus on the issues as they fight “for human rights for all people and all genders.” Founded in the 1980s as the self-dubbed “conscience of the art world” the groups uses intersectional feminism and humor to fight gender and ethnic bias as well as corruption in the art world and beyond. Their talk and exhibition, “The Art of Behaving Badly,” traces the history of their organization through their interventions and Public Service Announcements (PSAs) from 1985-2015.

In the exhibition The F* word – Guerrilla Girls and Feminist Graphic Design at the MK&G, the collective’s posters will form the starting point for a group show encompassing some 400 works dating from 1870 to the present day.
From the curator: Beyond the Streets London pays homage to the monumental moments from the worlds of graffiti, street art, hip-hop and punk rock as well as the artists who immortalised them. From painting trains to social activism, to the clothes we wear and the perception of underground art and culture - leading to a global creative revolution. BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON is a celebration of graffiti's core ethos of an innate desire for mark-making and challenging authority. By its very nature, graffiti is ephemeral, its own existence is temporary, but the culture and its rebellious spirit prevail.

House of Challenging Orders: A condemned office building turns into the exhibition venue for the VIENNA ART WEEK and becomes a unique creative experimental space. On three floors and a total of 1,000 m2 , around 40 national and international artists and performers question existing orders, canons and systems and invite us to challenge our own preconceived opinions and concepts.

OUT OF SPACE: DUSSELDORF VARIATION is a five-day intervention of art in public spaces across Düsseldorf. Curated by Junni Chen and Sophia Scherer, the 2021–22 fellows of the Curatorial & Research Residency Program, time-based media art abandons the conventional framework of an exhibition venue during the event, bringing works by artists into dialogue with specific sites in the city of Düsseldorf.

From the curator: Put It This Way unites almost a century of work by 49 women and nonbinary artists in a range of media drawn exclusively from the Hirshhorn’s permanent collection. One-quarter of the artworks have been made in the past decade by the likes of Loie Hollowell, Rachel Jones, Deana Lawson, Sondra Perry and Kiyan Williams. One-third have never been on view at the Hirshhorn. Recent acquisitions, including pieces by Dana Awartani, Zanele Muholi and Billie Zangewa, reflect the museum’s mission to acquire and highlight global voices.
Punchline, a takeover of its Tribeca space by the Boston-based Praise Shadows Art Gallery. Presenting works of various media from ceramics to video games, the show is inspired by artists who use humor to communicate issues that are often considered taboo or difficult subjects of conversation.
